Tell us your summer camp story and help send a kid to camp!
We all have that one camp story that brings us to tears (whether good or bad), that story we remember like it happened yesterday. It might be something that shaped you into the person you are today. We at Ciudad Nueva build relationships with kids throughout the year during our after-school programs, and in the summer we take 75 kids to camp. We ask you to remember your camp story and join us to give our kids the chance to make their own camp memories.
When you give towards our summer camp fundraising campaign, you are helping write new stories for kids whose lives are often more about getting through the day than making new memories.
Making memories that count
To celebrate these new memory-making opportunities, we would like you to do more than just give of your resources. We want to hear about your camp stories as well. You can support our summer camp fundraising campaign by sharing your story in text or video on Facebook or Instagram, or by sending us an email. Use the hashtag #whatsyourcampstory.
Then make a donation to help us send 75 kids from our after-school programs to camp. Click here to donate now, or send a check to 810 N. Campbell St., El Paso, TX 79902.
Our goal is to raise $75k by June 6th, right before elementary, middle, and high school camps begin.
Three reasons summer camp is so important
What summer camp story will you share? Was it embarrassing? Funny? Or was it one of those life-impacting moments that seem to happen whenever we take time out of normal life to do something different?
We hear this over and over again, which is why we are so committed to sending our after-school students to camp. It really does make a difference. Here are three reasons we find that camp has a lasting impact:
1. Spiritual formation
Sometimes all it takes is simply slowing down and taking time to listen, to experience nature, and to create space for important conversations. Summer camp provides the opportunity for all of those things. Add caring mentors and camp counselors to the mix and kids really have the opportunity to deepen their faith while discussing the challenges and highlights of life back home. During cabin time with their leaders and quiet time during the week, kids have the chance to pray about things they may be nervous or scared about. Large group sessions with speakers also provide opportunities to discuss what God is doing in their lives.
2. New experiences
Nothing makes us grow more than experiencing things outside our normal routine. It also helps us get a different perspective on our own lives so that we can think about changes we might want to make. Summer camp is the perfect place for kids to get these kinds of experiences. In addition, they will try new things such as rock wall climbing, ziplining, ropes courses, horseback riding, and many other activities that build confidence and character. For many of our camp participants, this is their first time travelling out of the El Paso area and seeing new places.
3. Deepen friendships
Singing in the bus, laughing after lights out, sharing challenges and victories, or roasting marshmallows by the campfire — all of these experiences allow campers to build trust with both peers and counselors. Deeper relationships provide opportunities for encouragement and growth and carry over into the school year, allowing our groups to support students in more relevant ways throughout the year.
