“If she couldn’t get the money, she would be evicted.” It all started this past fall with what seemed like a routine request for financial assistance. Letty*, one of the women from the food co-op, had an emergency. Her son’s car had broken down, so Letty had done what any mother would do — she gave her son the money he needed to get his car fixed. But when it came time for Letty to pay her rent, she realized she would need to ask for help for herself. Letty knew that Ciudad Nueva had helped other people in similar situations, so she came to Tamy Diaz, Launch Pad Coordinator and Community … [Read more...]
Loving Leaders in the Community
Bethany’s title is Youth & Family Programs Director, but her job encompasses so much more than that. Bethany is an El Paso native and has been with Ciudad Nueva since she and her husband moved back to the area in 2013. You can read about her education and qualifications on our staff page. Bethany brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to her job, but the most important quality she brings to Ciudad Nueva is her passion for seeing the community come together to solve problems and meet needs. “It is my great passion to help cultivate spaces where our neighbors can walk confidently … [Read more...]
Reflecting on the Old, Looking Forward to the New in 2019
What community goals did we meet last year, and what will we be working on in 2019? The turning of the calendar from the old year to a new is the perfect time to reflect on where we are in our personal lives, and it’s a great time to look back on what we’ve accomplished as an organization as well. There’s always so much more work to be done, but we’re truly amazed and grateful that we have truly done some incredible things this year! It’s all through the hard work and dedication of our neighbors, staff members, volunteers, and partners. In our main program areas, these are some of … [Read more...]
Two Teenagers Lead by Example and Make an Impact on Our Middle School Program
Ciudad Nueva relies on our amazing volunteers to keep our programs operating. Without people to do all the big and little tasks, we wouldn’t be able to continue the work we do, nor would we have the capacity to connect with our neighbors and mentor the students that come through our doors every day. This past year two sisters involved in our high school program became middle school volunteers. They really stepped up and made a difference with the students and had a positive influence on the other volunteers in the program as well. Anika and Aranxa have been part of Ciudad Nueva since they … [Read more...]
It’s the Most Giving Time of the Year
We are so grateful for each and every volunteer who has come through our doors over the years. Each person brings their own unique gifts and experiences to share with our wonderful downtown neighborhood. They might not live here with us, but they become part of our community as we bond together in meeting needs and mentoring young people. Even the best volunteers have to move on from time to time, so we are always looking for new volunteers in El Paso who would like to have an impact on their community and get to know some really great people. Most of our volunteers say they equally enjoy … [Read more...]
