Cabby was a mentor at Ciudad Nueva who worked with a group of our younger boys for about five years. Hopefully you read our recent post about one of those boys, Jesus, whose family ended up having a deeper connection with Cabby throughout the years. Her story is a small view into what prompts someone to be a mentor and what blessings can be experienced as a result of the time invested in a child’s life. Diving into something new can be scary for anyone Even adults get nervous trying something new. Cabby mentioned that she is a shy person so mentoring was definitely something a little out … [Read more...]
Having a Mentor Makes a Difference
The impact that we can have on one another’s lives was once described to me like ripples on the surface of water when a pebble is dropped in. The ripples keep on moving outward, far beyond the point of initial impact. I have always loved that image — that our actions and relationships keep rippling out beyond what we see. Most of what we do at Ciudad Nueva is relationship-driven, and nothing is more essentially relational than the mentoring groups in our youth programs. From the youngest students all the way up through high school, we rely on our mentors to make connections and … [Read more...]
Volunteers Come From All Walks of Life
Volunteers are an important component of almost every program that exists at Ciudad Nueva. Volunteers Drive More Than Just the Buses Around Here
With a new school year starting, volunteers at Ciudad Nueva are preparing for the return of all our students to the usual school routine — snacks, games, homework help, and just hanging out. We are always looking to welcome new volunteers, and the beginning of a school year is the perfect time to join our students in a new adventure for a season. No matter what your strengths and gifts might be, we can find a place for you to be … [Read more...]
Onward and Upward — A New Soccer Start at Ciudad Nueva
The Upward Soccer League gives a new generation of little soccer players a chance to play in our Rio Grande neighborhood About ten years ago, a soccer team was formed out of a few pick-up games, some very enthusiastic players, and a few extremely dedicated coaches. You can read about the Sun City Wolves in our recent blog post here. This team was extremely successful, not just in competition, but also in commitment to one another off the field. The family environment that was formed between coaches and players has continued even as the players have grown and moved on to careers and … [Read more...]
