Each year, we welcome recent college graduates to work with us through our Border Fellows program. This 10-month leadership development program offers these graduates an opportunity to serve and learn as they transition out of college and prepare for their future calling. They work alongside our team while serving the community to deepen their understanding of service, justice, and reconciliation. Hear from two fellows who are in the middle of their time with us and what they’re learning along the way. Small Groups Breathe New Life into Middle School Ministry
“No kid goes unnoticed” When Lexi Moles, Ciudad Nueva’s Middle School Program Coordinator, received a complaint from a parent that their child wasn’t hearing about Jesus often enough during the middle school program, she could have dismissed it as inaccurate or unhelpful. Instead, Lexi chose to allow the parent’s complaint to serve as a catalyst for reevaluating the entire program. “We are a Christian- and faith-based nonprofit, so I thought the parent had a valid point,” Lexi says. “I guess the program had stayed stagnant for awhile.” Lexi responded by weaving small groups into the … [Read more...]
What People Are Saying After Witnessing the Humanitarian Crisis on the Border
In our post from earlier this month, we shared about a new initiative called Abara that grew out of the work Ciudad Nueva has been doing on the U.S.–Mexico border over the past several years. Two Countries, One Community: How We’re Bridging Divides to Address the Humanitarian Crisis at the Border
The U.S. city of El Paso and the Mexican city of Ciudad Juárez might lay on opposite sides of the U.S.–Mexico border, but the two cities have long considered themselves to be a tightly connected community. This binational solidarity was broadcast to the world in the aftermath of the El Paso shooting on August 3, 2019. Long before then, however, individuals and organizations from both sides of the border were coming together to address the needs of migrants at the border. Ciudad Nueva is one of the organizations on the U.S. side of the border that has stepped up to address the growing … [Read more...]
How Soccer Is Helping Deepen Community in the Rio Grande Neighborhood
Soccer has deep roots at Ciudad Nueva Youth-serving organizations have long known that soccer is an excellent tool for connecting with kids and teaching them important life lessons. Christian organizations are no exception, with many churches and faith-based nonprofits sponsoring youth sports leagues as a way to help introduce kids and their families to the life-changing person of Jesus. It’s no surprise, then, that a youth soccer team comprised of middle school kids from Ciudad Nueva would form shortly after the organization’s founding in 2004. Tom Beeman, a Ciudad Nueva volunteer for … [Read more...]
